Law Enforcement Program

Belgian Malinois Law Enforcement K9 Program*

*Training Police Service Dogs for Patrol, Detection, and Apprehension*

*Why Departments Choose the Belgian Malinois*

The Belgian Malinois is the dominant breed in U.S. law enforcement and military K9 units. Selected for drive, environmental soundness, and recovery from stress, the Mal thrives in patrol, SWAT, narcotics, explosives, and search & rescue roles. They are smaller and faster than the traditional GSD, with longer working careers and lower hip dysplasia rates when sourced correctly.

*Our Selection Standard*

Every prospect is evaluated on:

1. *Nerve strength*: No environmental sensitivity. Must work on slick floors, in crowds, under gunfire.

2. *Hunt drive*: For detection prospects, independent and persistent search without handler prompting.

3. *Fight drive*: For dual-purpose, willingness to engage a fighting decoy and stay in the fight.

4. *Social character*: Stable enough for school demos, civil enough for force options.

5. *Health*: PennHIP or OFA hips/elbows, cardiac, and full vet workup. No dog works if it’s broken.

Dogs that fail any category are washed. A bad K9 is a liability to the department and the city.

*Training Framework: Dual-Purpose Patrol/Detection K9*

*Phase 1: Selection & Imprinting 8 weeks – 7 months*

- *Drive building*: Prey development through tugs, balls, and flirt pole. We build possession and confidence before adding stress.

- *Environmental work*: Airports, vehicles, rubble, dark buildings, muzzle work, and live gunfire at distance.

- *Detection imprinting*: For narcotics/explosives, odor is paired with reward from day one. Target odor is always the payout.

- *Tracking foundation*: Urban and rural tracks aged 5–30 min. Focus on handler reading their dog, not dog following points.

*Phase 2: Formal Patrol School 6 – 8 weeks, handler present*

- *Obedience under stress*: Off-leash heel, down at a distance, recall off a decoy. Out under pressure is non-negotiable.

- *Apprehension work*: Bark & hold and bite & hold depending on department SOP. Emphasis on targeting: bicep/forearm or legs.

- *Building/Area searches*: Indication on a find is a passive bark. Dog must show courage to push into rooms.

- *Article search*: Evidence recovery in grass, pavement, and vehicles.

- *Handler protection*: Dog engages on assault to handler and releases on command or when threat stops.

- *Decoy work*: Dogs work hidden sleeves, muzzles, and full bite suits. They learn to fight the man, not equipment.

*Phase 3: Detection Certification 2 – 4 weeks, concurrent or post-patrol*

- *Narcotics*: Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth, and derivatives. Optional: fentanyl after 12 months of age with safety protocols.

- *Explosives*: 10+ base odors per BATF/TSA guidelines. Includes HME recognition.

- *Indications*: Trained final response is passive sit or down. No aggressive alert on people.

- *Proofing*: Distractors, blank vehicles, residual odor, and extreme heat/cold.

- *Records*: All training logged for court. We build court-defensible dogs from day one.

*Phase 4: Scenario & Deployment 1 – 2 weeks*

- *SWAT integration*: Working around flashbangs, gas, shields, and dynamic entry.

- *Vehicle deployments*: Bailouts, fender holds, and suspect extractions.

- *Tracking to apprehension*: Real-world tracks ending in bite or bark & hold.

- *Night work*: Dark buildings and wooded areas. Most felony activity happens at night.

- *Policy alignment*: Training matches your department’s use-of-force matrix and state case law.

*Handler Courses*

We don’t sell dogs. We sell teams. Every K9 comes with:

1. *4–6 week handler school*: Decoy skills, first aid, legal updates, and maintenance training.

2. *Report writing*: How to articulate K9 use in your RMS for Graham v. Connor compliance.

3. *Maintenance plans*: Monthly problem-solving and annual recertification to state/national standards.

4. *Court support*: Training records, expert witness testimony, and video documentation.

*Standards We Certify To*

All teams are prepared for certification through one or more:

- NAPWDA, USPCA, or CNCA

- State POST mandates

- TSA for explosives dogs if applicable

*Department Support & Warranty*

- *12-month performance guarantee*: If the dog won’t certify due to genetics/nerve, we replace it.

- *Lifetime phone support*: Call us from a scene if you need help.

- *Annual recert*: We come to you or you come to our facility.

- *Grant assistance*: We help with USDA, Homeland Security, and private foundation paperwork.

*The End Product*

A K-9 team that is a force multiplier: locates suspects faster, finds evidence, deters assaults on officers, and creates positive PR when done right. The dog is a tool that must be controlled 100% of the time. We build thinking dogs with clear rules of engagement.
